Frugal Christmas Giving
This year we’re keeping the number of Christmas gifts down. My wife and I are to the point where there’s not much we want or need. I’d like to get rid of some stuff in fact. Both of our sets of parents are well past the point where they need things, and our kids have too much junk already.
For both sets of parents we’re giving them a coupon for one work day per month. We’ll go to their house and do whatever they want us to do. We did this a couple of years ago with my parents and it worked out great. So great they asked for it again actually. Since my wife’s parents are moving into a new house there’s no telling what they might need, so this gift should be perfect.
The kids will get few things this year. They’re loaded with hand-me-down toys, many of which they don’t even play with anymore. For every toy that comes in, one will go to donation. We’ll probably get them some movies and books, maybe a game and some puzzles. The gift I’d like to give them most of all is more of my time, but we’ve got to pay off debt and build passive income for that to become a reality. All-in-all this year our gift giving budget is about 1/3 of what it normally is. Somehow, I think we’ll still have a great Christmas.
