What Are You Going To Spend The Money On?

When I told a friend the other day that I made a bit of money selling World Series tickets his first question was “What are you going to spend the money on?” The question kind of took me by surprise. I don’t generally hang out with financially frugal folks, but I didn’t think this kind of rampant consumerism was prevalent in my circle of friends. He didn’t have much reaction when I told him I wasn’t spending it on anything.

The question got me wondering if I was saving too much. Is it possible to save too much? I don’t really think it is. There are things I’d like to spend some money on, but there’s nothing I really need, so why not save it? The thing I want most is to give up my life in the corporate world and the only way to do that for now is to pay off debt and invest. Once investment income is greater than living expenses I’m retiring!

We have friends that make good salaries and still struggle to pay their bills. We also have friends with huge household incomes that have a new house, two cars less than two years old and lots of new stuff. Both types of friends will be working forever. I don’t want to get into that trap. I want out of the rat race and if I can make a few extra bucks here and there it’s going to help me get out of the rat race.

So are we saving too much? Maybe, but every bit I save brings me that much closer to the end of my working life so it’s definitely worth it.

Listen, you are definitely not saving too much. Where did you get this idea!? The feeling of watching my ING balance go up by 6k (that’s what I saved this month) is way better than the feeling that buying anything w/ that money would have given me. You and I have the same ultimate goal, BTW.
