Frugal Furniture
We’ve been using the furniture my wife got as a teenager in our bedroom since we’ve been married. It’s old, and a tad dated, but in fine shape and certainly does it’s duty as designed. But we grew tired of it (like a lot of things we’ve had for years). At the same time, our son is getting bigger and it’s time for some “big boy” furniture.
Furniture Shopping
Furniture shopping with kids is not the most enjoyable experience around, that I can tell you. But we did it anyway, looking for something good for the little man. The only thing he liked was basically a “playground” bed set that we felt he would outgrow within a couple of years. So an entire day of driving around to furniture stores, seeing the same families over and over again, was lost. Well, not totally lost because he decided he’d like a bunk bed. At least we got something figured out.
Love The Neighbors
We mentioned our fruitless shopping trip to our neighbors who told us that their son is about ready to get rid of his bunk beds. They offered to sell them to use for a very reasonable price later this year. The bed dilemma is solved! Now, what about a desk, dresser and nightstand?
The Solution
We (my wife) decided to refinish the bedroom furniture we don’t want anymore. Having grown up in a house where countless pieces of furniture were refinished, I wanted no part of this chore. My wife undertook it with gusto though and after about 4 weeks she had the final product. It looks fantastic! Now we have great usable furniture for our son that cost about $150 for refinishing supplies and new hardware. He should be able to use it as long as he stays under our roof. And changing the color will be just a matter of repainting.
Of course, our room is a little barren now…
